One Health Hackathon

What is the One Health Hackathon?

The One Health Hackathon is an innovation event organized by and for high schoolers, aimed to equip the next generation of global health leaders with the tools to prevent future pandemics. Teams are assigned a particular disease, for which they used One Health principles to come up with a solution. Over the course of 4 days, teams come up with action plans to tackle their disease, which can range from policy platforms, to business pitches, to tech prototypes and more. Along the way, they receive direct mentorship from leading experts in the field and attended lectures on diverse topics related to One Health.

My Role

As part of the leadership team of OHH, I was responsible for recruiting speakers and making the OHH program possible. OHH teams are mentored by leading experts in global health and hear about their work in our virtual lecture series. In the two years that OHH has been running, we've had a total of 500+ different participants from 42 countries, creating 100+ innovative projects to develop solutions to emerging zoonotic viruses with a focus on the One Health approach. We also received over $8,000 in sponsorships from United Health Care, Wolfram, and The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society, among others. I am encouraged by the thought that, in the future, children may never have to worry about deadly diseases like Ebola or malaria. Through my work with OHH, I provide a platform for our participants to enact change within their own communities, and in turn, the world.

Transcending National Borders

As an integral part of the recruitment team, I helped create our community of 500+ students from 42 countries.

I successfully recruited dozens of researchers and doctors as a part of the mentor and speaker recruitment team. Here are some of our presenters. (Lectures linked)
