Model United Nations & the International Youth Politics Forum
Model United Nations
As a Global Security and Security Council delegate in my school’s Model United Nations, I represented Represented Spain at OMUN 2020 and the US at OMUN 2021, presenting research on topics such as Military Artificial Intelligence, the current state of Nuclear Weaponry, Biological and Chemical Weapons, and the construction of the new UAE Nuclear Power Plant. For example, representing Spain, I weighed the morality of an AI military weapon such as a fully automated unmanned drone and discussed the possible concerns and current deficits in the Spanish military that would make a shift to using an AI fighting force an impossibility. And if unmanned drones were widely used, I proposed various laws and regulations so that there would always be someone who could be held accountable in the event that a weapon had a misfire or violated Spanish military conventions. Through MUN, I shifted my perspective between countries, taking into account even the differences of administration throughout the time periods I had to compare. I learned to think critically about how countries go about fulfilling their goals and represented my school’s country as the primary global security delegate in the state conference at the University of Oregon. International Youth Politics Forum
Along with MUN, I lead my school’s chapter and am an international executive member of the International Youth Politics Forum, a student-run political news organization that endeavors to bring together multiple perspectives to help the world’s youth see global issues from multiple sides. As a chapter head, I ran the podcast team, managing a group of fellow students to create a monthly podcast about current events, and offering a platform for students at my school to talk about tough issues in an open environment. One topic that we covered was the impact of drug decriminalization in Oregon, and the different factors that must be considered when trying to investigate these impacts. Throughout the podcast, I discussed the history of drug decriminalization in the world, using Portugal as a case study. I also researched the use of safe-inject spaces in San Francisco, whether that had a lasting impact on illegal drug use in California, and if the same tactics can be used in Oregon. Through IYPF I explored the impact of local legislation in my community, and various actions that can be taken to make similar positive changes in Oregon, using unique perspectives to contribute to my intrinsic motivation to bring unbiased representation and conversation to my generation.
